Our story

In 2012, Android had become dominant after only 5 years, from a 5% to 65% market share in 2012. The first fleet of heterogeneous devices, smartphones, had created the first, massive “edge-with-cloud” computing ecosystem, with cheap-to-design software components. The APPs only needed to be written once, and were delivered everywhere, onto diverse electronic devices thanks to a standard “virtualization”.

In 2012, Dr Fred Rivard, Founder and CEO along with the future MicroEJ core team, decided it was the right timing to invest a few tens of millions of dollars to build a unique virtualization platform for the cost-effective electronic devices (the “Things” of the IoT). We accomplished this in the spirit of Android, using same APP standardized format, so that we could leverage the community of 20+ million mobile engineers. There was “only” one challenge: the size of the core virtualization needed to be about 1000 times smaller than Android, in order to cope with the economical constraints of more than 10 Billion devices that are cost-effectively manufactured every year. It took my R&D team 4 years to break that barrier, to create our MEJ32 softcore. Packaged within our Virtual Execution Environment (VEE), it now powers millions of devices, in various industries across Manufacturing, Smart Home, Wearables, Retail, Healthcare, Metering, Utilities, Industrial, Consumer, Defense, etc.

We are proud to positively contribute to a better digital world, with useful digital Things for every one: it is really rewarding for the teams, for our partners, for our customers, and obviously for the final users.”

Our Vision

Leveraging Electronics with Software-Defined Smart Devices

At MicroEJ, we reimagine electronics as smart, software-defined devices that enrich lives and drive sustainable progress. Just as phones evolved into smartphones, ushering in a wave of applications that revolutionized our daily lives and gave rise to entire industries, we are leading a similar transformation for all electronic products. We empower device manufacturers to shift from baseline, functional devices to AI-enabled intelligent products that seamlessly interact with the entire digital world, and foster app ecosystems—all while simplifying design complexity and using cost efficient newest electronic.

Since our founding, our commitment to lowering the technological barriers to transform the way industries create new experiences has been part of MicroEJ’s DNA. We believe that in the coming decades, innovation and new products will originate from software, offering exponential possibilities to develop countless new features on minimalistic hardware. To enable this future, we bridge the gap between mobile, cloud, IT systems and smart devices, shaping cutting-edge technology to meet the needs of cost constrained, low-power devices. Our strategy focuses on industries ready for this evolution, starting with wearables and energy and now expanding into smart home, medical, and automotive sectors. In every vertical we touch, we pioneer a new economy, unlocking possibilities, applications, and revenue streams.

At the heart of MicroEJ’s journey are three core values: Innovation, Dedication, Excellence. We focus on simplifying access to leading edge technology so that manufacturers worldwide can seamlessly concentrate on their branding and value-added features to deliver smarter, better products to their clients. This dedication is shared by our talented team—individuals driven to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and inspire one another to reach new heights.

As we look to the future, we are inspired by the potential of human ingenuity to create a world where devices are more than functional—they become essential, intelligent parts of our daily lives and society, contributing to a sustainable, interconnected world. Together with those who share our vision, we will continue to shape this future, creating value that benefits everyone.
